The Best family is a free black family that helps slaves escape. She is seperated from her father and is on her own when she is found by a brother and sister, Daniel and Josephine Best. The reader is entertained while being educated. Belle is a sixteen-year-old slave in Kentucky who escapes to freedom in Michigan on the Underground Railroad. The author did her homework and she enumerates the experiences of slavery, the bounty hunters, and the Underground Railroad. She is discovered by the handsome Daniel and his younger sister, and their family becomes her own in other words, Belle goes from being a slave, in a miserable existence, to being treated like a princess. Belle is separated from everyone and winds up lost in Michigan, tired and hungry, with bleeding, aching feet. Belle and her father are in a group of escaping slaves when they encounter trouble. Yet, we read these stories for just that outcome and the author does a tremendous job of telling this bittersweet tale. All the loose strings are neatly tied up and the most unbelievable finale becomes true for the two main characters. This is a romance,novel with the typical happy ending.
